About Jester

Mission

Jester is a platform for the development and presentation of contemporary visual arts located at the C-mine site in Genk, Belgium.

We support artists through residencies that provide them with the time and space to experiment, research, and develop their practice. The residencies are aimed at both emerging and more established artists and offer access to studios, workshops, technical expertise, artistic guidance, and a professional network.

Jester organizes three exhibitions per year with an emphasis on presentation formats that generate dialogue. Duo exhibitions bring together two distinct artistic practices, whereby at least one of the artists is affiliated with the residency programme. This ensures that each exhibition is directly informed by a development trajectory at Jester.

Vision

Our activities are embedded in the specific context of Genk and the C-mine site. The post-industrial landscape, Genk’s urban transformation, and the presence of a diverse cultural ecosystem form a meaningful breeding ground for artistic research.

Our name refers to the medieval figure of the jester: a critical, ambiguous, and relational position that operates from the periphery, questions existing structures, and creates space for other perspectives. Jester sees its role as connecting artists, audiences, local contexts, and institutions, thereby contributing to an open, caring, and polyphonic artistic field.

Jester was founded in 2021 through the merger of FLACC and CIAP and is supported by Flanders and the City of Genk.
