Cart Wheels & Accessories ( (CIAP expo)

Volkaert combines his position as an artist with a job as an art handler, and the creation of his own work with the manipulation of existing artworks. His work is propelled by a fascination with the sculptor's craftsmanship and a respect for his own materials and tools. Yet Volkaert does not handle these tools in a traditional way: he explores their properties, pushing, sanding, auctioning and firing until they leave their familiar surroundings. The results are amorphous forms in cement, clay and plaster, finished with metal, silicone and pigment. Supporting elements such as the base, handles and hanging systems become an integral part of the sculpture.

His expo expands on Steering Wheels & Accessories, an earlier series of ceramic sculptures. At the same time, it references the existing tradition of social realist paintings depicting rural life and the emerging mining industry. These are combined with contemporary elements from advertising, entertainment and the skate scene.

Tom Volkaert presented several exhibitions at Everyday Gallery and Alpha-Base Gallery in Antwerp, and Rod Barton ini London.
