Summer Start

On Saturday, June 21 (10:00-22:00), C-mine, Jester, and LUCA School of Arts are welcoming the summer together: a solstice filled with art, sound, movement, and delicious food, spread across twelve inspiring hours.

The day kicks off with OOGST, the local farmers’ market on the square, where your senses will be delighted by fragrant herbs, fresh vegetables, and artisanal treats. Some food stands will remain open in the evening, so you can enjoy tasty offerings at any time of the day. A DJ will provide the perfect soundtrack for this summery beginning.

C-SLAB, a new art and climbing project by C-mine in collaboration with KLUMKLIB and LUCA School of Arts, is organizing its first bouldering event that day. On the longest bouldering wall in the Benelux, climbers will explore new routes where sport, design, and art converge.

Follow the ground drawings scattered across the site. Artist Ilke Gers developed the art installation C-mine 3600 Genk during her residency at Jester, exploring the shared context of the C-mine site. This public artwork focuses on the relationship between body, movement, and language, challenging the normative structures that shape our daily lives and communication. The project is a co-production between C-mine and Jester.

At Jester, the duo exhibition it will come from below by Junghun Kim and Ada Van Hoorebeke opens. Over the course of six months, they engaged in a dialogue about the landscape scars of Winterslag. With new works, largely developed at Jester, they pay tribute to the slag heap and the local regenerative ecosystem.
There is also much to discover inside the Energy Building. In the Gallery, Thom Trojanowski presents paintings, ceramics, and chalk drawings inspired by his daily walks in the Winterslag area.

In the Design Center, the exhibition EXIT showcases the graduation works of a new generation of artists from LUCA School of Arts, PXL MAD, and UHasselt. As an extension of EXIT, the LUCA School of Arts building hosts LUCA EXITplus, where you can discover works by LUCA master’s students in Animation Film and Television-Film, and bachelor’s students in Photography, Product Design, Game Design, Animation Film, and Television-Film. First-year Photography students take over underground parking level -2 with their exhibition Substrata.

Finally, be sure to visit Studio Pieter Stockmans for Blue Heaven and get an overview of his work as a porcelain designer.
For the youngest visitors (ages 3 to 6), there’s the new family game Stamp Along with Cyriel the Cricket, an adventurous journey through the C-mine expedition full of discoveries and playful tasks.

Welcome to the longest day of C-mine, Jester, and LUCA School of Arts!
